This type was never intended for
circulation because of the fresh law that prohibited the portraits of
living persons from appearing on United States currency (see the Five
Cents Fractional Currency with Clark's likeness). All of the
Sherman/Grant notes may have been printed as wide margin Specimens, but
many were trimmed and placed on Fractional Currency shields. This
may explain why Variety 2 is unknown as a Wide Margin specimen.
Some Specimen notes were printed
on blank paper captured from Confederate blockade runners during the Civil
War. Prepared for the Confederate States of America for use on their currency, this paper features a distinctive "CSA"
watermark. Parts of the watermark are often visible on Specimen notes.
